About:

As carbon capture begins to develop in several regions of the world, a question remains about the fate of captured CO2 molecules. The possibility of burying CO2 in geological reservoirs (carbon capture and storage, CCS) is often opposed to a “circular” path where CO2 is considered as a waste that can be revalued or reused (carbon capture and utilization, CCU) in a certain number of applications: chemistry, synthetic fuels and construction materials in particular.

During this Dialogue, François de Rochette (Zenon analyst) and Thibault Cantat (CEA) will offer an overview of the current and future uses of CO2, the resources and volumes involved, and will address a number of key questions to understand the challenges of CCU and its development: how to assess their climate impact? What role does it play in net-zero scenarios? Are CCU and CCS two competing paths, or is it possible to consider synergies? What infrastructures are needed to establish a “circular CO2 economy”?

Conference organized in partnership with Mines Paris PSL.
