The transport sector in France accounts for 31% of greenhouse gas emissions. Its decarbonization involves electrification, which is based on the use of lithium-ion batteries. Installed capacity increased from 25 GWh 10 years ago to 250 GWh today, and could be multiplied by 10 by 2030. This growth is based on major challenges: availability of a small number of raw materials, management of batteries at the end of their life, continuous optimization of performance. At both the scientific and industrial levels, many innovations are developed to adapt to the constraints on raw materials and improve performance. Globally, production is currently largely dominated by Asia, but new players are emerging in Europe and North America with new technological proposals and are already preparing for the post-lithium-ion era.
