About

In recent years, many countries have announced that they want hydrogen to play an important role in their decarbonization strategies, in particular through the production of “green” hydrogen (i.e. by electrolysis of water with electricity from renewable sources). While discussions often focus on potential uses (automotive, road freight, aviation, heating, etc.), the question of its production, and in particular its scaling up, is generally not addressed enough.

Europe's goals for the production of green hydrogen are particularly ambitious, since the RepowerEU plan aims for 10 Mt produced in 2030 (to which are added the 10 Mt of imports). Such a quantity would involve having more than 500 TWh of electricity from renewable sources (i.e. the production of electricity from PV and wind power in Europe in 2020) as well as an extremely rapid deployment of electrolysers, which raises the question of its real availability in the medium term.

The aim of this conference is to provide an overview of the various means of producing low-carbon hydrogen, to identify the technological and economic obstacles to their deployment and to estimate the production potential in the years to come.
