In 2022, commercial aviation emitted more than 800 Mt of CO2 into the atmosphere, or approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions (80% of the pre-covid level). Being one of the least ecological means of transport and attracting more and more travelers, it is necessary to quickly decarbonize the sector, although the technical and logistical constraints inherent to it (weight/power ratio, safety standards, etc.) make this decarbonization difficult.
It will therefore be necessary to activate all the levers available to bring the sector as close as possible to carbon neutrality by 2050: reduction in air traffic, fleet renewal, optimized flight plans, improved airport logistics... Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF in English) in particular, are presented as the keystone of this decarbonization. Indeed, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) believes that they could contribute up to 2/3 of the reduction in CO2 emissions required to achieve carbon neutrality. Numerous fuels and production methods are therefore being considered in order to successfully supply the sector's demand (288 Mt in 2019 With a Expected increase in traffic by 2.5 by 2050) at the moment in constant increase.
What is their decarbonization potential? Will these fuels be competitive for players in the sector? Finally, do we have enough resources to produce the volumes envisaged? We will attempt to answer these questions comprehensively during this event.
