Conference: Small and modular: will SMRs make it possible to relaunch nuclear power?
From the first commercial nuclear power plant inaugurated in 1956 in Calder Hall to the 443 reactors currently in service around the world, nuclear energy was deployed at a rate barely equalled in the 2000s by wind and solar. Today, the majority of decarbonization scenarios foresee an energy mix largely dominated by renewables and relatively little nuclear power.
However, at a time when reducing CO2 emissions sharply and rapidly is a necessity to limit global warming, nuclear power has undeniable advantages: flexibility, diversification of uses, access to energy in isolated areas. What development should we consider for Small Modular Reactors? How could these reactors represent the future of nuclear technology? What are the current projects and their level of maturity? What economic model?
