About:
Presentation by Robin Girard (Scientific Manager at Zenon) and Thomas Boigontier (Zenon Analyst).
The demand for lithium-ion batteries is growing rapidly. These batteries, which are currently essential to our daily life and to the electrification of transport, are based on minerals called” reviewers ”, that is, “of great economic importance and with a high risk of supply disruptions due to the concentration of their sources and the absence of quality and affordable substitutes”. This dependence generates major complications, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and conflicts of use. Critical questions are being asked about the sustainability and safety of this technology.
This dialogue will focus on the end of life of lithium-ion batteries, with an emphasis on recycling. Although the current volumes of batteries to be recycled are relatively low, a large number of batteries at the end of their life are expected to be on the market by 2030-2035.
This session will make it possible to present the benefits, or not, of recycling, in particular with regard to the material and environmental pressure of the mining industry and also from an economic point of view. Will be analyzed the various stages and routes of recycling, the main technologies, the existing and announced recycling capacities as well as the key players. The uncertain evolution of different battery chemistries, influenced by price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions, will also be addressed since it raises real concerns about the volume of secondary materials available and the resilience of recycling channels.
Finally, considering that recycling is not the only lever for action to sustain the growth of lithium-ion batteries, Alternatives will be examined such as sobriety, advanced battery design and strong regulations and ambitious covering all aspects of the end of life of lithium-ion batteries.
